Spirituality and Recovery | Safe Harbor Treatment Center for Women

Spirituality and Recovery | Safe Harbor Treatment Center for Women Video Clips. Duration : 2.03 Mins.

www.SafeHarborHouse.com Safe Harbor Treatment Center for Women is nationally recognized as the premier Women's Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment Facility in Southern California. The Power of Positive Thinking People always say things like "think positive," and "if you want success, envision yourself succeeding." It may sounds like an oversimplified strategy, but in recovery, positive thinking is incredibly important. Setting your own mental tone is a way of creating the space that your psyche is going to be living in for the day. For us addicts and alcoholics, making the mind a peaceful and happy place does not always come naturally. Prayer and meditation are two tools that the 12 steps teach us to use to refresh our mental climate, but each person develops their own additional strategies that help them reboot and allow the mind to be a positive space. For me personally, yoga, music, gardening, cooking, spending time with cats, and any artistic pursuits are all activities that help me regain mental balance and restore positive energy to my thoughts. For you, the list will probably be different, which is wonderful. Everyone needs to learn in recovery what things they can do to supplement their program that make them feel happy and spiritually whole. If I don't take action to keep my thinking positive, I can and will slip into self-loathing, laziness, and irritability, all traits that do not become me, and also feelings that once drove me to drink and use. He blamed me for "misdimeanor forgery" which never happened, as all fraudulent charges against me were fully dismissed by presiding judge. The Colon Cleanse Weight Loss

A colon cleanse weight loss may be one of the healthiest ways to lose weight. The diet is simply healthy and leaves out "fake foods" such as artificial sweeteners, fake fats or unnatural flavors as an exertion to heighten the food. And supplements used can fill in nutritional gaps that most of us have but are unaware of.

Instead, the healthy colon cleanse weight loss diet may help you learn how to eat naturally, which is healthier for your body. The diet in general includes fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Fresh, lean protein is encouraged and may even include vegetarian proteins, allowing you to find new, healthy recipes. In addition, fresh whole grains are eaten; a benefit since most of us eat highly processed grains that may include underground sugars and other compounds that may sabotage weight loss.

Angeles Drug Los Rehab

Fruits and vegetables should be the staple of your detox diet and program. It is a fact that most of us do not get the number of fresh furnish that we should eat every day. This may be due to lack of knowledge of because our taste buds are conditioned to eating processed foods.

Eating more fresh furnish can re-train your body to enjoy these healthier types of foods. In addition, eating fresh vegetables is one of the most productive ways to raise metabolism. As you eat more salads and fresh veggies, your digestion simply revs and is more capable of digesting proteins and grains. Fruit simply cleanses your body and provides fullness of cusine that maintains energy.

Unprocessed proteins are healthier for your body. They will be less likely to have underground ingredients like metabolism slowing sugars or other compounds used in preserving and processing. A colon cleanse weight loss schedule encourages healthier proteins in the form of fresh, organic meats in minute quantities. Other proteins are encouraged such as beans, legumes, sprouts and nuts, allowing dieters to contemplate other protein possibilities to add to their healthy food choices.

This is important to our condition in an advanced society. It is well known that confident meats are more likely to cause cancers among other diseases. In fact, according to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, diets that are rich in red and processed meats may not only be unhealthy, but deadly.

Whole grains are also encouraged during a weight loss cleanse program. This is because refined or processed grains, like confident cereals and breads, are stripped of nutrients and fiber. Fiber is the basis of any cleanse program, therefor whole, unprocessed grains are encouraged.

When deciding on which grains to use, look for uncooked grains that do not include any "flavorings" or preservatives. Try wild rice, amaranth, sprouted and organic breads, and other whole grains. Look for recipes in healthy formula books to learn how to make these types of unprocessed foods appetizing if you have never cooked with them before.

It is a fact that even as many Americans are over-weight, many of us also suffer from malnutrition. Having excess weight does not mean one has excess nutrition. Nutritional supplements used during a colon cleanse weight loss may help to fill in nutritional deficits. This may be very important while one is losing weight to help verbalize energy and keep a happier mood while lessening stress.

Some supplements that may be included in your cleanse schedule are fiber, significant fatty acids, green superfoods, and even capsaicin or cayenne to help burn unhealthy fat cells. Each of these can help nourish your body, replace missing nutrients and even accelerate weight loss.

Inform yourself and seek out the discrete colon cleanse weight loss programs available. The best methods will include a healthy detox diet, fiber, and other ingredients that are nutritionally sound. Try to avoid methods that just don't make sense and stick with those that explain why they work. And, of course, if you take medications, check with your doctor before taking any supplements, convert in diet or exercise.

Cocaine Warning Signs

This is another in a series of articles outlining the symptoms and signs of abuse of and addiction to varied hazardous drugs, both legal and illegal.

First, a petite about cocaine:

Angeles Drug Los Rehab

Cocaine abuse and cocaine addiction is not a new problem in most of the world. Cocaine was first used recreationally in the 1860s and speedily spread world-wide. varied preparations of cocaine were added to cigarettes, nasal sprays, ointments and other preparations together with "tonics". The negative effects of coke use were very soon recognized and by 1914, laws were passed in the Us outlawing its use without a designate as a hazardous and addictive substance.

Now a major problem, the true effects and risks of cocaine use are poorly understood by those who take it. It is even thought about by addicts to be relatively safe, as addictive drugs go. But according to the Us center for Disease Control, (Cdc), poisoning deaths from cocaine more than double those from heroin and for three of the most recently years, deaths from cocaine poisoning assuredly tripled the overdose deaths of heroin in the United States.

Cocaine Use - corporal Signs and Symptoms.

People under the sway of cocaine appear restless, fidgety, extremely talkative and seem to have increased energy levels. They experience euphoria, anxiety, feelings of superiority or increased alertness and hyperactivity.

Physical signs comprise increased body temperature, running nose and watery eyes. Decreased appetite, dilated pupils and problem sleeping are also possible indications. Nose-bleeds can be another sign of sniffing cocaine.

After-effects of cocaine use may be lethargy, intense sleepiness, hallucinations and often depression.

Behavioral and Emotional Signs and Symptoms of Cocaine Use

The first sign of illicit drug use will be changes in attitudes. These changes may be very subtle or quite marked, but will regularly be sudden.

When a regularly calm someone changes to an anxiety ridden, enduringly entertaining and talkative "flibbertigibbet", it could be a sign of cocaine use. But if those changes or also mixed intermittently with depression and sleepiness and lethargy the likelihood is increased.

Cocaine abusers are regularly combative and quick to anger. They take offense assuredly if they are recently off and when addiction has set in, these changes become more pronounced and more constant.

Cocaine Paraphernalia:

Pocket mirrors, small plastic tubes or dollar bills which have obviously been rolled into tubes. Razor blades being carried for no apparent guess is a bad sign. Sometimes the razor will even be worn on a necklace like a pendant. This is not a 'fashion statement', it is indication of illness of drug abuse.

One of the most hazardous qualities of cocaine is that it is extremely addictive. If you see these symptoms and witness cocaine use in a friend or house member, the clock is ticking. Ignoring the warning signs for a week or a month only increases the chances that the someone will become dependant. Getting help, the sooner the better, provides the best opening of beating the problem of cocaine addiction before it claims another victim.

Avoiding Shoulder Dislocation and divorce Using Prolotherapy

The shoulder is made of a complicated matrix of bone and soft tissue that allows it an greatest range of motion. But there is a price the shoulder pays for that range of motion. Greater risk for persisting injury.

The shoulder is held together by soft tissue stabilizers lead by the ligaments that connect bone to bone. Over the procedure of time, especially in sports that involve heavy shoulder to shoulder palpate such as hockey, lacrosse, football, wrestling and basketball, the ligaments stretch out and become "lax." When the ligaments become lax, the risk for dislocation and disunion becomes greater.

Angeles Drug Los Rehab

In a February 2011 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers took a look at rugby players with measurable shoulder laxity to gauge the risk of shoulder dislocation. What they found was that 50% of those athletes tested were at significant risk.

How does dislocation occur?

It is estimated that 95% of shoulder dislocations occur when the athlete suffers a blow to the shoulder that forces the shoulder joint "back' or downward or when they fall to the ground with their arms stretched over their heads.

Strengthening the ligaments as deterrent measure:

The key to avoiding shoulder surgical operation or devastating shoulder disunion requiring surgical operation is to improve the shoulder capsule. This can be done by working the strong shoulder muscle group and/or by treating the weakened shoulder ligaments with a uncomplicated injection technique called Prolotherapy.

To understand the significance of the need of strong ligaments to hold the shoulder together, the athlete needs to understand that the severity of shoulder disunion injury is measured by the degree of injury to the ligaments.

The acromioclavicular (Ac) and the coracoclavicular (Cc) ligaments hold the shoulder together at the point where the collarbone (clavicle) and the end (acromion) of the shoulder blade (scapula) meet.
In type I level disunion the Ac is partially torn, the Cc is not. In type Ii disunion the Ac is thoroughly torn, the Cc is partially or not torn In type Iii disunion both ligaments are thoroughly torn.

Obviously the more significant the tearing, the longer the athlete is out of their sport.

Untreated shoulder instability can lead to an alteration of an athlete's game to "protect" the sore shoulders or worse persisting shoulder disunion that can keep them away from their sport for significant amounts of time.

Prolotherapy and the shoulder ligaments:

Prolotherapy is an injection therapy consisting generally of dextrose which accelerates the body's own inflammatory response to heal ligaments.

By isolating damaged ligaments, and injecting these spots, the liagment can be healed and strengthened straight through controlled inflammation. This is done straight through the stimulation of a new collagen matrix. New collagen makes ligaments stronger, thicker, and restores them to their normal strong, taut state. To any athlete stronger is always the best option.

Prolotherapy can work fast, a treatment once a week over a 4 - 6 week duration is regularly all that is needed to see results. Side-effects are also limited and in many cases the athlete can continue their activities during treatments.

Can I Get My Misdemeanor Expunged?

People make mistakes. It happens. You may have been convicted of a misdemeanor in the past, in a juvenile indiscretion or under stressful circumstances. The good news is that you may be able to have that crime removed from common summary on your record. This process is called expungement, and though it doesn't thoroughly remove your crime, it will preclude population from being able to see it on your criminal record. If you've repaid your debt to community and learned from your mistake, there's not infer that you should continue to be burdened by a criminal record.

Why Should I think Expungement?

Angeles Drug Los Rehab

A criminal article can seriously work on your capability to live your life to its fullest. Fortunately, many states have laws in place allowing certain crimes to be expunged from your article if you meet certain qualifications. Additionally, if the Second occasion Act of 2009 passes, expungement will be ready throughout the United States regardless of jurisdiction. An expunged article can open a lot of doors that would otherwise have been done to you.

What Misdemeanors Can I Have Expunged?

Although the details vary by jurisdiction, there are some general qualifications you must meet to have your crime expunged. For starters, it must be only a misdemeanor, rather than a felony. Expungement is meant to benefit the population who's made a mistake, not the serious offender. Other common requirements for expungement include:

A certain pre-determined number of time must have transpired in the middle of the sentencing and when you are able to file for expungement. There is only one misdemeanor on your record, and it is non-violent. All terms of your sentence have been carried out.

Some of the most common crimes that can be expunged are:

Petty theft collective intoxication Disorderly conduct Trespassing Vandalism

The most recent Drug Pushers in Town

There is a new drug pusher in town. He does not hang out in the alley or on the street corner-and it is not Heroin or crack this time. This time the pusher is hanging out much closer to home and the drugs are what most citizen would call medicines. More teens abuse these than all types of illicit drugs combined, if you exclude marijuana.

Online drug market are happy to dispense any controlled drug at a price much higher than one would pay at a regular pharmacy and an estimated 85% of these sites need no prescriptions or inescapable identification. Drugs such as Opioid (opiumlike) pain-killers (Oxycontin, Vicodin), muscle relaxants and anti-anxiety drugs (Valium, Xanax), and stimulants such as Ritalin are the most often abused.

Angeles Drug Los Rehab

Left-over pills in the treatment cabinet can become a windfall for a young someone looking to get high or make a tiny extra cash at school. Many teens who would never touch illicit drugs might abuse prescription drugs because they seem to be a safe way to get high and they are so readily available.

The truth is that while these medications might be taken as prescribed and for short periods when needed with relative safety, the amounts being taken to "cop a buzz" are way beyond the stylish dosages and could be lethal.

Abusers are using these drugs to carefully create a tailor-made, desired feelings. Before school or a party they may take Oxycontin or Vicodin to get high, then add some Valium or Xanax to mellow it out a bit. Later, a join of sleeping pills to get some rest or, if the party is still going, a tiny Ritalin to last the night. This is a whole action that screams of a lack of sufficient drug awareness instruction.

Combining two or more drugs can cause distinct results than the same drugs taken separately. This can occur in any ways:

1. Inhibitory. One drug may block the effects of another. This can lead to a perilous overdose because of a lessened perception of the effects of the drug and the user may believe they have not reached their limit.

2. Additive. The effects of both drugs are gift and one does not influence the other.

3. Synergistic effect. In this case, one drug can multiply the supervene of another with totally unpredictable results.

Combining any drugs is risky, but the deadliest combination is this:

As the user takes the drugs more frequently, Tolerance builds. This means that more is required to feel the same high. Eventually, to accomplish Any pleasurable effects, dangerously high doses are needed. At the same time, the drug abuser's mind becomes more and more clouded and their potential to make clear judgments is reduced and they are more likely to take deadly amounts of the drugs.

This combination of higher doses and poorer judgment results in the souring numbers of overdoses seen in the last decade from prescription drugs.

While much is being done to keep these medicines out of the hands of those who would misuse them, ultimately, it comes down to parents and educators to ensure young citizen have what they need: the truth about these drugs and what their abuse can do.

How to Defend a Forged prescription Case

Forgery of designate Defense in California

California has a law, contained in California company and Professions Code 4324(a), prohibiting forgery of a prescription. That act is committed when a defendant falsely makes, alters, forges, utters, publishes, passes, or attempts to pass, as genuine, any designate for any drugs.

Angeles Drug Los Rehab

All the state needs to prove is an action to falsely makes, alters, forges, utters, publishes, passes, or attempts to pass as genuine any designate for any drugs. The prosecution does not have to prove that a person categorically received the drugs.

Note that this includes the "uttering" of a forged prescription, which is where a person uses a forged document even though they know that it has been forged. For example, giving a forged designate to a pharmacy is known as "uttering." In order to prove that a person has committed a crime, two things must be proven. First, it must be proven that a person has forged, uttered or otherwise altered a designate for a drug or drugs. Second, it must be proven that the false designate was for a drug of a narcotic nature.

Alternatively, person can be convicted if it is shown that they gave a designate for a narcotic drug and that the signature on the designate was forged, fake or the designate had been altered from its primary state. If you are expensed with forging a prescription, you should contact a lawyer immediately.

The act of forgery is the creation of a fake document or the alteration of a document, or putting a fake signature on a document in order to illegally benefit from what the document says or orders. This includes things like signing other people's names to legal documents, car loans, warranties and, yes, prescriptions for drugs. Forging documents and/or signatures is a serious offense, and you can be expensed with a misdemeanor or even a felony.

For example, you could be found guilty of forgery of a designate for naturally altering any material fact of an existing prescription. You could also be found guilty of forgery even if there was no evidence that the fake designate was never even used, if the state can prove you had the knowledge that the designate was false (the use of the word "falsely" above is what substitutes for intent for this crime).

Here's how to successfully defend against a designate charge.

First, know what the law states, and what you're defending against. There are two types of designate forgery charges under California law:

Felony designate forgery, which is a felony based upon the narcotics alleged; and Misdemeanor forgery, which can be expensed as a misdemeanor based upon the type of narcotics alleged

The maximum for this offense is 1 year in county jail and a ,000 fine if expensed as a misdemeanor, and minimum 16 months state prison up to 3 years state prison and a maximum ,000 fine if expensed as a felony. (See California company & Professions Code §4324(a) )

Commonly, the designate narcotics for which a false designate is expensed contain Oxycontin, Adderall, Percocet, and other addictive prescriptions.

Second, analyze the evidence for legal defenses, or factual defenses.

The evidence is usuall contained in a polie narrative or in the testimony of a police officer. Legal defenses are thorough defenses created by the law, such as incapacity, or a mistake of law. Factual defenses have to do with the element of the crime -- if it can be shown that the facts don't reserve the elements above, then you can bring a petition for a dismissal.

Third, see if alternative sentencing can end up dismissing the case.

Frequently with the advice of a defense attorney, clients fetch drug treatment programs in lieu of jail, together with Diversion, Deferred Entry of Judgment, or Proposition 36. Thriving completion of such programs often leads to the whole case being dismissed. This is the most base way to dismiss this type of case, as it is the easiest way to dismiss this charge - complete the class, and the case is dismissed entirely.

Other key factors to reconsider in these cases are if the defendant has a prior criminal narrative for narcotics offenses. If the defendant has a prior narrative for drug crimes, the punishment would typically be more severe, although the consulation for a drug rehab agenda is stronger. If there is no prior narrative then punishment can be greatly reduced.

The key is pre-enrollment in any court approved restoration agenda that covers the medication or narcotic that is at issue in the case, as well as obtaining school transcripts, resumes, letters of character reference or hint letters to personalize the defendant and gift mitigating factors towards a allowance or dismissal in the case.

With that data in hand, most attorneys can make a strong pitch towards obtaining a extremely favorable succeed in Forgery of designate cases.

A Year Ago Today: A Personal Story Of Loss, Grief And Shining On

"We all shine on, like the moon and the stars and the sun..." John Lennon

A year ago today, I lost my seventeen year old nephew in a tragic car accident. Against the back drop of the imminent onslaught of Katrina, my family and I struggled to deal with the shock and disbelief of what was happening nearby us. We pulled close and braced for the biggest life storm yet.

Angeles Drug Los Rehab

I have heard habitancy refer to the 'the phone call that changed their life'. Backing out of my driveway exactly one year ago, on a beautiful La summer morning, I came to understand the meaning of the phrase. This morning, one year later, I relived my cell phone ringing and hearing my mom say "Where are you right now?" she continued, "your brother wanted me to call you and let you know the boys (Thomas and John) have been in an emergency on the way to school. They have been air lifted to Children's medical in Dallas." I pulled back in the driveway and nothing has ever been the same. Presto changeo phone call.

Family Geography 101: Being in one of the southern states during the evacuation duration for Katrina brought the panic that much closer to home. Texas is my family's home now. I started the trend by relocating from my birthplace of Oklahoma to Texas after college, to pursue my vocation in music and acting. A few years later, my brother, Matthew, followed the Texas trail with his wife Candice, toddler Thomas and newborn John. My parents followed months later. I now have lived in Los Angeles for thirteen years with my husband. They stayed in Texas.

After hanging up from the 'life changing phone call' with my Mother, and waiting and praying an agonizing 3 hours. My brother himself called me. He ask if my husband was with me and told me to hold his hand. Then he said the words, "John is going to be ok, but Thomas didn't make it". After that I didn't hear whatever he said. I might as well have been underwater. I passed the phone to my husband, and I went into the bathroom and screamed. Then I cried like I have never cried before.

I all the time thought that if something this horrible ever happened to my family, I would never end up being in the bodily position so stereotypically portrayed in a Lifetime movie of the week. But there I was beating the floor, sobbing, wishing I could turn back time. How could our precious, talented, good hearted, dreamer Thomas be gone, just like that?

Fast forward to the next day on a plane from Lax to Dfw and a cab to Children's medical Center. In my purse, I still have the worn out, white index card on which I wrote my nephew John's room number: A-2 Unit, Room 297. The first someone I embraced was my sister-in-law Candice, Thomas's Mom. We held on tight for what seemed like hours. I didn't want to let her go because I didn't want time to move forward. I wanted time to be reversed, or at least stand still. Next I see my Mother, Dad & brother, and ultimately poor dinky John, all bruised and sore, his jaw swollen shut, his face full of glass.

Then the details come. The boys were heading to school early so they could get to an early morning band practice. They were crossing one of those busy, treacherous country highways and an eighteen wheel flatbed gravel truck struck them on the driver's side. Thomas's side. Their car was drug under the truck, shaving off the top of the car. Then the car caught fire. Initially the truck driver saved their lives by extinguishing the fire. A Care Flight for each boy carried them to Children's Medical. But Thomas had so many complications they just couldn't' save him. It is a miracle that John survived. Let alone with no broken bones. Just recovery for his jaw.

While the residents of New Orleans and were evacuating, my brother and wife were making funeral plans for their son. Choosing to have him cremated, because that's what he would have wanted. Choosing who to call, Deciding, deciding.

When it was time to bring John home from the hospital, they wanted to do it alone. The three of them walked into their home. John without his big brother, Matthew & Candice without their juvenile son.

I returned with my parents to their house, me without my nephew, my parents without their grandson.

Social details began to be revealed as we watched the Katrina news in the three days before Thomas's Memorial service: The 'on-the-scene' newscast that had mistakenly led the society to believe that both boys had died; The newspaper article, with a photo of the totaled wreck so unrecognizable as an automobile you couldn't outline which end was the front and which was the rear of the car; and the police scan one of my cousins heard as far away as Kansas City.

The society hold was overwhelming. An endless line of caring neighbors bearing food and hugs. In darkness comes light. The light for me and my family was not only the caring outpour from the community, but the habitancy whom we least staggering to be there, were the ones at the forefront. One of the quarterly patrons at my brother's favorite bar in fact snuck into the hospital dressed in scrubs with a badge, bearing a holder of gum, some ink pens and legal pad. Appearing to my brother like an angel in the night, an angel nicknamed Comet wisely told him, "these are the things you all the time need in the hospital". And then just as swiftly as he appeared, he disappeared. There are many stories like that one. Near strangers in an elevator with just the right words at just the right time, old childhood friends walking straight through the receiving line at the memorial service.

There were over six hundred habitancy at the Memorial Service. Bus loads of kids from Thomas's high school lined the pews. Relatives, friends, caring neighbors. Later I was sad for a dissimilar reason. Why do we only see many of the habitancy we love at weddings and funerals? Life keeps us busy I guess. I have only been able to see my family on three detach trips this year.

The emotional high point for me at the assistance was when John Lennon's recording of his song "Instant Karma" played. My brother made sure the song was played because Thomas loved John Lennon.

As the cards stop coming, and are back to establishment our own meals, we are left with an empty space where Thomas used to be. We talk about him often. Between us and to our therapists.

Thomas had many passions, music was only one. He was a sixteen year old activist who never withheld his opinions or questions about life's true meaning. After the hurricane ripped straight through the heart of America, I could hear all of the outspoken views he would have had about the disaster, the way the government failed. The way they are still failing.

His mom told me the other day they are still receiving letters from congress habitancy he had solicited for dissimilar causes.

John turned thirteen years old seven days after his brother's death. He has recovered from his injuries and is pouring himself into playing guitar and trombone. When I saw John in June we were learning Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". It turns out shortly before Thomas died he had ordered any Pink Floyd Cds. When the holder arrived from Amazon.com they couldn't bring themselves to open it until now.

As the cards stop coming, and we are back to establishment our own meals, we are left with an empty space where Thomas used to be. We talk about him often, Between us and our therapists.

Each of us has our secret sorrow. Talking about it over the phone sucks. Most of the time just phoning to say I love you is enough. We all seek ease in our daily activities and church communities. My brother spent days sorting clothes for Katrina victims.

When a young someone is taken before they have lived their life it's just wrong. It goes against the cycle of nature. We expect our grandparents and parent to pass before us. But a young boy becoming a man, full of questions and potential - he should be heading off to college, he should be eighteen, he should have a girlfriend, he should be watching South Park, he should be playing the saxophone, he should be winning another consider contest, he should be acting in another play, he should be a lawyer and live in California with his wife and kids! This was an accident, not an act of God. It was an accident.

My brother has forgiven the driver of the truck. So I am not about to make him suffer added by forcing an investigation into how gravel trucks get paid by the load and how fast the driver was going. The driver saved John's life. And while the pain he feels from Thomas's death is unlike ours, it is no less painful.

Yesterday, "Instant Karma" came on the radio. It was the first time I allowed myself to listen to it since the service. And then I remembered, "Instant Karma gonna's get you, gonna knock you off your feet, better recognize your brothers, everyone you meet... And we all shine on, like the moon and stars and the sun.

We all shine on.

juvenile Offenders Ordinance

Nowadays, our society is becoming complex. When we read newspaper, listen to the radio or watch television, there is no doubt that some news are related to crimes, for example, drug trafficking, indecent assault, wounding, gang violence, criminal intimidation, robbery, burglary, criminal damage, triad activities and so on. An alarming picture appears, some of the crimes mentioned above are piquant youngsters; some cases (e.g. Selling pirated Vcds) involve some youngsters as young as eleven or twelve years old.

If a young man has broken the law, they will be prosecuted under the teenage Offenders Ordinance. As a public worker, we will encounter similar situations or enquiries in our daily practices, so it is very leading for us to equip some knowledge and understandings of the ordinance related to teenage offenders.

Angeles Drug Los Rehab

The Spirit and ideas underlining the teenage Offenders Ordinance

Every society should admit that some kind of people are vulnerable, they are assuredly under threats, attacks, illnesses and so on. No man will assume children are strong enough and able to act or to think as a wholesome adult. They must be protected and contribute as much opportunities as to invent their morality, body and skills.

Law is no exception from the above concepts. If we take a look at the ordinances about crimes related to teenage offenders, we may be assuredly impressed by the relatively lenient treatments or punishments for these offenders.

So who can be called as a child or young person? And whom the teenage Offenders Ordinance will affect? agreeing to teenage Offenders Ordinance (Cap. 226 Sec. 2), a "child" means a man who is, in the conception of the court having cognizance of any case in relation to such person, under the age of 14 years. A "young person" means a man who is 14 years of age or upwards and under the age of 16 years and it is clearly stated that no child under the age of 7 years can be guilty of an offence.

If a young man has violated the law, they will ordinarily be trial in the teenage Court; no man shall be gift at any sitting of the teenage Court except officers or any persons directly related to the case concerned. We can see clearly the teenage are best protected from other or covering disturbances and any things do are trying to minimize the psychological impacts on them.

There is special disunion of children and young persons in police stations, courts and course in the teenage Courts too. Some restrictions are imposed on the punishments of the children and young persons; for example, no child shall be sentenced to imprisonment or committed to prison in default of payment of a fine, damages, or costs. No young man shall be sentenced to imprisonment if he can be suitably dealt within any other way and even if he should be sentenced to imprisonment, he shall not be allowed to join together with adult prisoners.

As we can see clearly from the above legal concepts about teenage offenders, it is not hard to notice some ideas and spirits are underlining the ordinance. As our society recognize child and young man are still developing their thinking capacity and their cognitive potential are not well enough to distinguish what is right or wrong, what is moral or immoral and what is offences or not. Personally speaking, it is suitable to protect them from the psychological impacts as much as inherent when they are under the criminal proceedings or prosecution.

Rather than sending the young offenders into the jail, there are many other options ordinarily available to courts for the purposes of rehabilitating the young offenders between seven and 14 years of age, for example, the society sustain aid scheme, the police superintendent's discretionary scheme and so on. We should note that the options available to a court in dealing with the young offenders focus in general on resumption rather than punishment, it reflects the society ordinarily agree that young people should be given opportunities and opening to accurate their wrong doing. As these young people becoming mature, they will contemplate there are still opening for them to remedy what they have done wrong before and relatively lenient punishments will minimize the opening of ruining their life.

Adequacy of the teenage Offenders Ordinance

In Hong Kong, the minimum age of criminal responsibility is statute based. It shall be conclusively presumed that no child under the age of 7 can be guilty of an offence. It creates in Hong Kong a conclusive or irrebuttable presumption that a child is doli incapax (incapable of committing a crime), but over the age of seven, in respect of a child aged between seven and 14 years, Hong Kong Sar follows the common rule established in medieval England that a rebuttable presumption will apply, the presumption can be rebutted by the prosecution on proof beyond uncostly doubt that, at the time of the offence, the child was well aware that his or her act was seriously wrong, and not merely naughty or mischievous. When this presumption is rebutted or removed, full criminal responsibility will be imposed on the child who may then be charged, prosecuted and convicted for any offence allegedly committed.

As the concepts mentioned above, it seem the child aged between seven and 14 years are still being protected from the doli incapax, except some rare circumstances, but I just want to point out that the criminal procedures are long and complicate, it will generate numerous psychological pressures for the young people being prosecuted or investigated. During the year of enjoyable childhood, they suffered from these pressure and the proceedings may affect their studies too.

In many other developed countries, the minimum age of criminal responsibility is higher than Hong Kong's, it can make sure more children will not be under the complex legal prosecution, it is not only sell out the pressure they will suffer, but also help to sell out the legal costs.

Most children in Hong Kong begin their kindergarten education at the age of three or four. School attendance is compulsory for those at the age of six or 15. School are required not only to contribute scholastic training for their students, but are also tasked to invent their reflective and requisite thinking, moral attitudes and public values. They are in case, granted with opportunities to custom moral values and make moral decision under teachers' guidance. When the children are seven years old, they have already received some four years of formal education (two years in kindergarten and other two years in original schooling). Personally speaking, it is risky to assume that when a child attained seven years old, they must by then have had inculcated in them the conception of "right" and "wrong" and the requisite "moral attitudes" and "social values" requisite for their recognition that a distinct act is a "serious wrong" in the commonplace sense of the term.

It can also be argued that the enhanced educational opportunities available to today's children mean that they reach public maturity more swiftly than their counterparts in earlier times, and are capable of distinguishing right from wrong at a young age, children nowadays might be seen as more sophisticated than their predecessors, but I think best education does not necessarily warrant a greater readiness to distinguish right from wrong because the children nowadays might also subject to greater levels of misinformation, which may impede their potential to distinguish right from wrong. Also the gift education ideas places too much emphasis on intellectual amelioration at the expense of moral development. I think Hong Kong can consider rising its age of criminal responsibility.

In order to sell out the opening that adult using this legal loopholes, severe punishments should be implemented to safeguard the law rather than severely punish the teenage being used and in the expense of their enjoyable childhood.

Changes over the teenage Offenders Ordinance

In up-to-date years, there have been calls there for the minimum age of criminal responsibility to be raised. Those favoring a change argue that it is undesirable to subject young children who are still socially and mentally teenage to the full panoply of criminal proceedings, with their attendant sanctions and stigma.

On the other hands, calls for a reveal of the law governing the age of criminal responsibility in Hong Kong are undoubtfully in response to the teenage offences in up-to-date years. It reflects our society is no longer tolerant the crimes committed by the youngsters. Those who favor to lower of the gift minimum age of criminal responsibility argue that bring those young delinquents into the criminal justice ideas in their formative years provides an opening for systematic rehabilitation. Sanctions imposed on a child sell out the likelihood that he will invent a life long pattern of criminal behavior.

I hope we will not take the problems as a uncomplicated question, don't simply think when they commit crimes, criminal justice will solve all these problems. Many of the youngsters are the victims under controlled by the triad societies or syndicates. They don't know how to resist the threats or financial temptation from them. If we understand more about the crux of the problems, do something to deter it from happening; it is more sufficient and beneficial. We can pass heavy sentences to those adults using teenagers to commit crimes. Also, a child cannot be presumed to know the nature of the act simply because other children of his age and background would commonly be held to possess such knowledge.

Social Impacts made by the teenage Offenders Ordinance

Nowadays, the gift minimum age of criminal responsibility that children in their formative years should not be made subject to criminal proceedings as the trauma caused may be damaging. It not only provides a framework of rules, which rule or recognize what are suitable patterns of behavior within the society, but also avoid undesirable to enforce the stigma of conviction on a child. Apart from being unfair and inappropriate to subject a seven year old to the traumatic and confusing sense of appearing in court, it is also avoiding other undesirable result of persecuting and convicting a young child that he will bear the stigma for the rest of his life of wrongs committed at a young age. On conviction the child or young man will be left with a criminal record, which may adversely affect him in later life, it may at last lead him towards a criminal occupation and alienation from the society.

The impact is obvious, it implies that we have belief in the education or resumption services. We keep the faith that people can change or able to learn from the errors. When our society accepts errors and hold an open mind towards human, the society can develop towards a harmony environment.

Jails Creating Criminals

There is a pervasive quiz, lingering in the minds of many people today. It is the quiz, of how we can reduce the ever addition levels of crime and violence that plague our society. Because no one as of yet is focused on the explication as much as they are the problem, the usual reply given by politicians and the media is that we have to be even tougher on crime. It is an reply that comes from a deeply held trust that fighting against crime even harder will ultimately straighten this country out. This is an illusion. You can not ever get what you want by pushing against what you do not want. We can argue as people all we want about the corporeal reality we live in but the truth remains the same that what you see as physical, tangible manifestation is the direct consequent of energetic movement. And this energetic movement is controlled by thought. That means that if you are focused on crime, you will manifest crime. When a society such as ours does not understand this, we try to control others which we see as being "external". We believe that it is not in our power what someone else man does or doesn't do to us. We believe in victim-hood and so, we try to control others by creating laws. And we impose those laws with harsh punishment for all those who disobey them. Laws are merely the illusion of control. They do not work, and they run counter to the universal truth of greatest freedom. They will and do fail. Punishment is fighting fire with fire. It is hoping that we can teach corporeal and reasoning health to a man by demonstrating the opposite to them. Punishing man into wellness is a contradiction in terms and you can see it in the fact that the crime rate raises with the more jails we create. It is imperative that we facilitate a safe environment for all inmates and search for ways to better put in order them for their publish back into society. The de-humanizing environment of jails and prisons does not help, it compounds these challenges. Jails are not places of rehabilitation, they are terrifying, inhumane and miserable places that will luckily be seem as shameful to us in the future. They will in fact be seen in the same light as the infamous nineteenth-century "snake-pit" insane asylums are seen by us today. We are paying dearly for these institutions which do not work. And they will fall of their own economic weight. In mates are traumatized, even more so due to the fact that non violent prisoners are put in the same holding facilities as violent prisoners where nonviolent offenders often do in fact learn a lesson... The lesson of how to be violent. And so, our justice theory is not reforming criminals, it is creating them.

There is a mass societal failure at this point in time, to see the truth of what creates a perpetrator. We hold victims in a piteous light and perpetrators in a condemned one, which is as inaccurate as it can get. On an energetic level, both the perpetrator and the victim have the same vibration of powerlessness. It is hard for people to grasp the idea that anger and revenge is honestly a much healthier state for a man to be in than powerlessness and grief. The divergence between a victim and a perpetrator is that the perpetrator has tried to move closer to wellness by physically acting out in an endeavor to no longer feel powerless by committing a crime. In effect, they project their feelings of powerless out onto their victim and in doing so, feel more empowered. It is a reaction rising from fear. They do not comprehend that any operation taken from a place of fear (without advent mentally into a space of freedom) will only yield corporeal results coherent with powerlessness, such as prison. The victim however, has stayed in the state of fear and powerlessness. But still, the victim and perpetrator share the exact same energetic vibration.

Angeles Drug Los Rehab

Another part of the jail theory that is not working is that people are being put in jail for drug possession. More often than not, the drug dealers aren't the ones taking up room in prisons; they are too wealthy and smart to get caught. Instead, they hire addicts, to take the risks that consequent in confinement. And it is not the drug dealers, who generate the drug qoute anyway. Among the poor, drugs are a qoute resulting from alienation and isolation, of feeling unknown, unimportant, powerless, and hopeless. Among the affluent, they are an endeavor to keep up with or fly from a lifestyle that has nothing to do with straightforward human joy, friendship or connection. The qoute that needs to be addressed is not the drugs themselves it is the negative idea patterns that lead people to use them in the first place. These issues are ones that need to be addressed within ourselves, our families, and our communities. Not in jail. If we spent a fraction of the money that we would save by removing drug addicts from prison and put that money instead into recovery centers and society revitalization programs, we'd begin to put drug dealers out of enterprise in the only way that will last, by drying up their "market".

There are arguments over the board about either criminal behavior might be hereditary (genetic) or learned. To those of us who understand the corporeal and non corporeal interplay of reality, it is very clear that your genetics are not the dictators of your life; they are the corporeal expression of a blueprint of thought. If thoughts change, the Dna it's self changes. In other words it is activated and de-activated. It expresses it's self and remains dormant based on thoughts. So, even if we find a genetic similarity between criminals, the truth remains the same... Crime is the consequent of learned behavior and learned idea patterns. idea patterns can be "picked" up before a child is even born. But more often than not, the criminal behavior we are seeing is the consequent of negative childhood experience. Over the years, we have, as a society increasingly legitimized cruelty and callousness in response to the cruelty and callousness of criminals. In a number of prisons over the country we have reduced or eliminated the occasion for inmates to earn college degrees, restricted house visits, and restricted passage to books and magazines. And now there is even a growing communal sentiment to take off televisions and rehearsal facilities from prisons. When we do not understand that punishment is not the way to rehabilitate someone, we want to make sure inmates are miserable every second of the day. We no longer want them to get healthy. In our ignorance and fear, we just want them to suffer. It is this same vengeful attitude that leads our children toward violence. The peak age for violent crime in America is now eighteen, and it's edging downward every year. Our children grow up with the impression that it's all right to be violent toward other people. They are not learning compassion or reconciliation, because we are not teaching it to them. It is time to do so.

Our ideas of recovery normally revolve around education, job skills, and counseling. But this coming guarantees that many prisoners leave prison only to become merely better educated and better skilled criminals. Until they feel their association and value to others, learn how to shift their realities with obvious thought, and are taught exactly how to live within society, no true transformation will take place. We hold the false trust that if we empower and treat a man who has committed a crime positively, that it is the same thing as condoning what they did. It is also believed that they will be more likely to go do it again. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The Only real way to rehabilitate negative behavior is by demonstrating obvious behavior. Our justice systems will begin to work, (and may even go out of business) if those who commit crimes endure cognitive behavioral therapy. We must make our jails into institutions of service instead of punishment and make it the goal of jails to show those who have committed crimes, not only that they are loved but also to guide them towards a productive, healthy, empowered future. They need to receive the message that they are believed in and needed and valuable. If we empower them, they will no longer feel powerless to their impulses. They will have control over these impulses which they often feel they have no control of, which is in fact what leads to crime in the first place. people who are happy do not commit crime. people who feel their own worth and value do not commit crime. people who feel free and empowered do not commit crime. Our deepest nature is good. It is this innate goodness which is unlearned. No child ever raises their hand in kindergarten and says "I want to be a criminal when I grow up". We can not forget the possible that is possible within every personel (a possible which never goes away) and hope to make any obvious convert in an personel at all. For decades our justice theory has been run according to the tenets of retributive justice, a model based on exile and hatred. The time has come to focus our efforts instead on transformational justice. A type of justice that focuses on bringing a criminal back into society healthier, not end him or her out of it. Prisons can be turned into environments that maximize opportunities for the inmates to become healthy and caring human beings. In the hereafter of humanity, there will be no need for laws, for police and justice systems. But at this point in time, when these laws and institutions still exist (and still make people who believe it is possible to be a victim feel safe)... Instead of doing away with them, it is time to convert them.

Shoplifting and Loss Prevention: Do We Need a Fresh Look?

Traditional Loss arresting is not working. If it was working, the retail world would not still be suffering million or more a day in losses. If it was working, retail owners and store directors would not be going straight through security and loss arresting officers or the security fellowships they characterize like the free samples they often hand out to customers. security experts and loss arresting fellowships would not be enduringly scrambling for new accounts, or be in friction with the accounts they service.

Shoplifting is one of the least detected and most unreported crimes. Stock control in many shop is so deficient that few retailers know how many goods they are losing to shoplifters or their own staff. Statistically, so long as shrinkage does not exceed 2-3% of goods sold, retailers pay little attentiveness to shoplifting. There are also financial incentives for managers to increase the bottom line profits. The bonuses they receive are often based on profit margins, and paying for security services can be a drag on profits. Managers are under constant pressure to construe expenses in a corporate world driven by profit.

Angeles Drug Los Rehab

Retailers have spent millions trying to address the qoute of shoplifting. They invest in cameras and recording equipment and hire plainclothes officers or uniformed officers in an attempt to catch the shoplifter. Our personal experience has taught us that many retailers' perception is that if shoplifters are not being caught and arrested; the security enterprise is not doing its job. Arrests are a tangible corollary in the eyes of many retail managers and administrators. It is justifiable proof that the money they are spending on loss arresting is honestly paying off and as a corollary there is a stink in the air. There is often an unspoken hope directed toward the loss prevention/security officer, which goes something like this: "If you are not making arrests, you must not be doing your job. If you are not doing your job, why are we paying you?"

Let's think exterior the box for a moment. If there was a formula of effectively deterring shoplifters, and officers were successful at it, would retail managers and administrators recognize it? After all, there will be very few arrests if the "prevention" part of loss arresting is successful. In fact, if the officer is doing the job well they will be making fewer arrests and having fewer confrontations; not more. We encourage retail managers and administrators to take the time to fully understand the qoute of shoplifting, along with the legal and security challenges the security officer faces in every interaction they have with a customer or possible shoplifter.

Good security fellowships are hard to find, but those who excel understand their business. They hire good officers, use sound techniques, train their officers well and carry on personnel to the best of their ability. Unfortunately the "way we have all the time done business" holds many of their abilities captive. Rather than becoming a partner in deterring theft, the loss arresting officer becomes a requisite evil. The officer is often disdained by the retailers that hired them, yet is required in order to sell out liability and curtail theft.

Defining the Main Issues

• The largest qoute in the area of retail loss is the inability of Loss arresting Specialists to convince and persuade store owners and managers to heighten their security based on solid research.

• Retailers setup state of the art camera systems, and then fail to train officers how to use them effectively. Sometimes retailers do not avow their camera systems. Or perhaps the cameras are not placed in requisite locations. Some incommunicable cameras should honestly be exposed.

• Many retailers and some security fellowships use emotion rather than research to guide requisite decisions with regard to officer work hours and loss arresting methods.

• Retailers under-staff shifts which results in officers not being effective. Imagine one checkout clerk to 100 customers. Yet, there exists an hope that one officer on duty will be able to effectively monitor cameras, patrol the property, make quarterly rounds and address any security issue that candidly arises in increasing to catching all shoplifters. The statistics tell us that 1 in 11 habitancy shoplift. How does one officer effectively accomplish all this?

• Retailers put an tremendous amount of pressure on officers to yield results. This landed one retailer in the middle of a lawsuit as officers went beyond the legal limits to yield results. It cost the retailer over ,000 in the resulting lawsuit. 50K goes a long way. Depending on how you work the numbers, this amount is equal to the amount it would have cost to employ one loss arresting officer for over 3,000 hours. The employer responsible for the debacle wanted results. He was heard to say to his officers; "Go stir something up. Let's get something going." He received high-priced results.

• The retail business doesn't listen. I recently in case, granted consultation to a retailer where one of the managers insisted plainclothes officers confront customers parking in "no parking" zones; despite the fact the retailer had sworn uniform police officers patrolling the parking lot whenever the store was open. Common sense would dictate the police officer would be the logical one to speak to customers about parking violations; not the loss arresting officer.

• Retailers and Loss arresting Specialists have little respect for each other. Time and time again retail managers have expressed their disappointment with the officer who is assigned to their store but shows up late, in a dirty uniform and is more concerned in fraternizing with employees rather than catching shoplifters. This is a legitimate complaint and the burden rests squarely on the hiring procedures and training requirements of the Loss Prevention/Security Company.

In summary, there are many retailers and loss arresting personnel who just don't get it. Neither one wants to spend money to facilitate sound loss arresting principles in the spirit of excellence. The retailer wants to dictate the mission of loss arresting without seeing at the available research. Retailers are good at what they do; selling things. They are not security and loss arresting experts. Yet, they question results.

Can you Imagine the response to the loss arresting officer who walks into the retail manager's office and suggests how they might better price some of their items? Conversely, loss arresting fellowships complain about the way they are treated by retailers while providing them officers that are indifferent and unprofessional. There needs to be some open dialogue about these issues.

To wage a war one first must understand the enemy. To find any explication it is desirable to understand the qoute first. Let's take a look at who the shoplifter is.

Shoplifting Facts

Information and statistics in case, granted by the National relationship for Shoplifting Prevention, a non-profit organization.

• More than billion worth of goods are stolen from retailers each year. That's more than million per day.
• There are approximately 27 million or 1 in 11 people, who shoplift in our nation today. More than 10 million habitancy have been caught shoplifting in the last five years.
• Shoplifting affects more than the offender. It overburdens the police and the courts, adds to a store's security expenses, costs consumers more for goods, costs communities lost dollars in sales taxes and hurts children and families.
• Shoplifters steal from all types of shop along with division stores, specialty shops, supermarkets, drug stores, discounters, music stores, convenience shop and thrift shops.
• There is no profile of a typical shoplifter. Men and women shoplift about equally as often.
• approximately 25 percent of shoplifters are kids, 75 percent are adults. 55 percent of adult shoplifters say they started shoplifting in their teens.
• Many shoplifters buy and steal merchandise in the same visit. Shoplifters generally steal from to 0 per incident depending upon the type of store and items chosen.
• Shoplifting is often not a premeditated crime. 73 percent of adult and 72 percent of youthful shoplifters don't plan to steal in advance.
• 89 percent of kids say they know other kids who shoplift. 66 percent say they hang out with those kids.
• Shoplifters say they are caught an average of only once in every 48 times they steal. They are turned over to the police 50 percent of the time.
• approximately 3 percent of shoplifters are "professionals" who steal solely for resale or profit as a business. These consist of drug addicts who steal to feed their habit, hardened professionals who steal as a life-style and international shoplifting gangs who steal for profit as a business. "Professional" shoplifters are responsible for 10 percent of the total dollar losses.
• The vast majority of shoplifters are "non-professionals" who steal, not out of criminal intent, financial need or greed but as a response to public and personal pressures in their life.
• The excitement generated from "getting away with it" produces a chemical reaction resulting in what shoplifters describe as an improbable "rush" or "high" feeling. Many shoplifters will tell you that this high is their "true reward," rather than the merchandise itself.
• Drug addicts, who have become addicted to shoplifting, describe shoplifting as equally addicting as drugs.
• 57 percent of adults and 33 percent of juveniles say it is hard for them to stop shoplifting even after getting caught.
• Most non-professional shoplifters don't commit other types of crimes. They'll never steal an ashtray from your house and will return to you a bill you may have dropped. Their criminal action is restricted to shoplifting and therefore, any restoration schedule should be "offense-specific" for this crime.
• Habitual shoplifters steal an average of 1.6 times per week.
• Statistically, the majority of shoplifting incidents occur late in the week, between Wednesday and Saturday. Other high-risk times consist of non-school days, late mornings and late afternoons into the evening.

Employee fraud aside, we believe the most foremost statistic is: The vast majority of shoplifters are "non-professionals" who steal, not out of criminal intent, financial need or greed but as a response to public and personal pressures in their life, and shoplifting is addicting.

Differentiating Types of Shoplifters

Author Terry Shulman (Jd, Msw, Csw, Acsw, Cac-I) divides shoplifters into six safe bet groups, each with safe bet identifiable characteristics and improbable responses if they are caught. The ration that follows is Shulman's estimate as to the ration of the total shoplifting habitancy that the singular group comprises. Note: These percentages will turn to some degree depending on the demographics of the area.

• The Addictive-Compulsive Shoplifter represents 85% of the shoplifter population. This group emotionally has a lot of repressed anger and often exhibits signs of other compulsive addictions, such as overeating, shopping, drug use, or gambling. These habitancy often give to others and don't take care of themselves. Typically, they will steal items that are often inexpensive, and then give them to others as gifts. If caught, they will show guilt, shame, or remorse. Often, they will breakdown and cry when caught and confronted.

• The Professionals are those who steal for profit or lifestyle and they characterize 2% of the shoplifter population. Professionals will try to steal high-end, high-priced items, often stealing multiple items at one time. Many carry tools and utensils on them to support with the theft. Most likely, this group will resist arrest if confronted and will attempt to flee the store. If caught and detained, they will remain cool and calm, showing no remorse or emotion.

• The Impoverished are those who steal out of economic need and they characterize about 5% of the shoplifter population. Typically, they will steal necessities, like food, diapers, toiletries, or children's clothing. Often, their manner of dress and hygiene may be poor. If caught, they will usually show remorse, but state their disappointment with their lack of money, and may voice hostility against a "System" that keeps them impoverished.

• The Thrill Seeker steals on a dare or for the excitement. They characterize 5% of the shoplifter population. These shoplifters will often steal in groups. Many teenagers fall into this category.

• Drug Addicts steal to pay for their drug habit and they characterize 2% of the shoplifting population. Like Professionals, they prefer stealing expensive, high-end items, usually multiple items at a time. Their appearance often shows signs of substance abuse. They often carry drugs or drug paraphernalia on themselves. They are usually less truthful than the Professional, but will likely flee the store if confronted.

• Kleptomaniacs are habitancy who steal for no apparent presume and they characterize 1% of the shoplifter population. Kleptomaniacs are impulsive and often careless. They will often take items they don't need and can't use, like stealing shoes that don't fit. If caught, many will admit they are kleptomaniacs and do not feel much remorse or shame. They will often use Common excuses, like "I don't remember taking it", or "I don't know why I took it because I don't even need it".

Narrowing the Focus

The focus of loss arresting should be prevention. arresting policies and techniques should be aimed at the habitancy responsible for 85% of losses; the Addictive-Compulsive Thief.

The behavioral characteristics that should be determined when seeing toward techniques that are productive with this group are:
• There is a recurrent failure to resist obsessive, addictive, or compulsive thoughts and urges to steal objects.
• There is already an ever-present tension in their lives well before commission of the theft.
• The act of shoplifting brings satisfaction and relief at the time of, or just after committing theft.
• They usually feel guilt or shame afterwards.
• The stealing is very often acting-out behavior based in anger, or a way of trying to "make life right."
• The stealing is not due to show the way Disorder or Antisocial Personality Disorder. Most habitancy who steal are good, caring, law-abiding people.
• This group of habitancy is at risk of cross-addiction.

You now have a behavioral snapshot of the science of mind behind the habitancy primarily responsible for most of the shoplifting in the United States. The customer causing most of the loss in retail is doing so compulsively, successfully, often, candidly and is undeterred when caught. This person is perhaps as addicted to shoplifting as is the drug addict to the drug.

Fear of consequences does not deter this type of shoplifter. Prosecuting shoplifters does not deter future shoplifting. Many have been arrested before and already know the possible of jail is there, but they are too smart to get caught.

We recognize there are store managers who, regardless of research, cling to "old-school" techniques along with catching as many shoplifters as possible, believing word will spread nearby the society that their store is one the shoplifter should avoid because of aggressive enforcement. The key here may not be in sending everyone to jail, but in raising the perception the shoplifter will get caught. If you pick this route, it is best concluded by catching as many shoplifters as possible and processing them quickly. It may be well worth considering just trespassing the offender, by-passing the arrest reports and waiting for the police to arrive. If the merchandise is recovered and the shoplifter can be fast processed this way, word will spread. By doing so a store can generate an illusion they are catching everyone. However, this strategy does not address the core problem.

Framing the Solution

I have had requisite professional experience with habitancy who are struggling with addiction. Additionally, I have had experience with a large amount of restoration and saving programs. There is one principle in addiction you can approximately all the time count on. Until the addict reaches their own personal bottom, exterior intervention has little impact, as evidenced by the large majority of shoplifters who have been caught but continue to shoplift. Additionally, addicts are experts at manipulation and deceit. They know how to reach their goal.

Most addicts in saving have their own story to tell; how they hit bottom. It is unlikely that the retail and Loss arresting business is going to facilitate the saving of the shoplifting addict as this is not part of their mission. However, they can put some uncomplicated things in place to get the addict to think about their behavior. One of the soundest techniques with compulsive and impulsive habitancy is to get them to slow down; to think straight through their actions and the possible consequences. Retailers can do this.

Impulsive habitancy tend to organize psychiatric problems, be substance abusers and are characteristic of anti-social personality disorder. Normal inhibitions, which most of us possess, get no time to rise in these people. If the impulsive person's internal inhibition had a voice, it would be saying; "I am not responsible for my life." If the impulsive person's external inhibition had a voice, it would be saying; "I have no control; my life is ruled by external events." The need to satisfy immediate needs is all they focus on. This impulsivity is most effectively diffused by retention them in the "here and now", not yesterday or tomorrow.

The technique of getting them to slow down and think about what they are about to do is central to many cognitive-behavioral interventions for the addict. It teaches them how to stop before acting impulsively and think about the cause and corollary relationships of their intended behavior. Beyond that, it encourages them to avow to themselves or others what they will do, and then do the chosen behavior. Again, the purpose of the technique is to slow down the impulsive thinking long adequate to get them into the "here and now".

Before we apply this principle to loss prevention, let's take a look at some loss arresting research. Then, we will think some uncomplicated techniques with the former focus and goal being to pull the impulsive shoplifting addict into the here and now.

Loss arresting Research

Loss arresting is not complicated. Once the asset or merchandise to be protected is determined, form out what losses you are willing to accept. Then, based on finances, begin to put barriers in place between that merchandise and the person intent on stealing it. You implement these barriers in concentric circles, starting from the exterior perimeter working in towards the identified merchandise.

1. One well-known study showed that when specific merchandise was prominently marked with large red stars as being often taken by shoplifters, shoplifting was virtually eliminated. Researchers explained that publicly identifying specific items made the threat of detection and apprehension tangible.

2. research suggests that plainclothes store detectives have only a little impact on shoplifting. A study in a large London music store showed the store would need to hire 17 times more than the 4 store detectives they had on duty to catch all the shoplifters likely to enter the store. Advertising an officer's proximity (uniformed officer) has a greater deterrent corollary than a plainclothes officer, but it may also mean that shoplifters practice greater caution. little is known from research about the effectiveness of the uniformed security guard. In general, guards who continually move around, creating an active, visible presence, are likely to be more effective.

3. There is little evidence that prosecuting ordinary shoplifters is an productive deterrent measure. Consequently, there is requisite value in making the arrest course more efficient.

4. Civil Recovery: In nearly ½ of these cases, the sums are paid. Civil saving is not meant to be a substitute for criminal proceedings. Rather, it is meant to supply an added shoplifting deterrent.

5. Banning known shoplifters: little is known about the effectiveness of this practice, but it might have some little value.

6. Cctv. research indicates the value of cameras is directly linked to the sophistication of the principles used. Effectiveness is usually quite marked in the first few months after installation, but then tapers off. The explanation for this by researchers is that would be offenders become increasingly desensitized to Cctv. We think it is also likely that officers finally get into work patterns that may sell out their time in Cctv monitoring.

7. Using Electronic narrative lookout and tagging (Eas). multiple studies have shown this practice could sell out inventory shrinkage from 35-75%. There are, however, requisite costs in buying and running Eas systems.

Recommendations

Before implementing any strategies, you should make attempts to part the qoute first. Is there an excessive amount of roll-outs occurring? Where are the most opened items and cases found? It is good to define the many areas of vulnerability, and then employ strategies that target the vulnerability. Highest risk items should be given many protection.

Parking Lots: Keep the parking lot and exterior entrance doors clean and neat. Mount an safe bet camera in the area. Keep "no parking" areas clear.

Cameras: Mount Cctv at the front entrance of the store: customers will see themselves on television while walking into the store & when leaving. Monitors should be conspicuously placed. For covert lookout it is preferable to have the camera camouflaged, as most internal cameras are. Use these cameras to catch the offender doing something wrong without advertising they are being watched. Most habitancy do not look up in any environment unless prompted to do so. That is why these cameras work well in those situations. However, for deterrence, you want habitancy to know there is a camera watching them. The camera does not have to be real, but it should be obvious. After all, perception is most people's reality.

Signs at the Store Entrance: These signs should indicate that the store is monitored by camera surveillance, security personnel, and undercover officers and that the store has a zero tolerance course towards shoplifters.

Several years ago I was asked to consult for a store that was leasing space at a major mall for a little time to sell clearance products. I advised them to put signs at the entrance to the store space indicating the store was being monitored by electronic and human surveillance. Within 24 hours the store owner was approached by mall administrators telling them to take off the signs, because they did not want the public getting the wrong impression. This, of course, made no sense at all, and was clearly based on the administrator's fear that such a sign might plant the perception of a criminal proximity into the mind of shopper.

We advise something new and different; a direct statement to the person responsible for 85% of the shoplifting - the addictive/compulsive thief. The sign might read; "If you are struggling with shoplifting addiction, we advise you think the consequences of shoplifting. You will be arrested and prosecuted vigorously. There will be legal charges you will incur. You will be trespassed from this store and post your picture. We also experience one immediate family member and apprise them of your actions. Please think contacting Shoplifters Anonymous at xxx-xxx-xxxx or ShopliftersAnonymous.com." We would go as far as to advise perhaps there be pamphlets available as well to the shoplifting addict. This provides added intervention and a public relations side advantage is the safe bet concern the store has for those struggling with addiction.

Suggested Sign Language

• These premises under Video and Officer Surveillance. We prosecute all security offenses.
• We sustain the right to study all bags entering or leaving this facility.
• Warning! All activities are recorded on video to aid in the prosecution of any crime committed on these premises.
• Notice! For security reasons individuals entering or leaving the premises may be branch to search of their parcels or other unusual items.
• Free! Ride in a police car if you shoplift from this store.
• attentiveness Compulsive Shoplifters! If you are struggling with shoplifting addiction, we advise you think the consequences of shoplifting. You will be arrested and prosecuted vigorously. There will be legal charges you will incur. You will be trespassed from this store. We also experience one immediate family member and apprise them of your actions. Please think contacting Shoplifters Anonymous at xxx-xxx-xxxx or ShopliftersAnonymous.com.
• attentiveness all shoppers! Merchandise marked with red stars are items being often taken by shoplifters.

Instruct your employees and loss arresting or security officers to make direct eye experience and speak to as many customers as possible. customer assistance is one of the easiest and most productive ways of deterring the shoplifter. A shoplifter needs privacy to steal. Good customer assistance greatly reduces the customer's privacy straight through visible experience and direct communication. This direct transportation translates into an unconscious message of "bonding" between the store and the possible thief. It unconsciously deters the thought of shoplifting. It is more difficult to steal from person you know than a perfect stranger. Make the customer feel welcome. Make the customer happy. Make the customer feel that you are ready to help them with their shopping needs. Start a conversation; whatever to generate a bond with the customer.

In the event that the officer or employee suspects a customer is attempting to steal, they should immediately advent the customer and offer assistance. The possible shoplifter is likely to think they have just been observed shoplifting. If they think they are caught, they may want to leave the stolen item in the store. There are several ways of handling this. The officer can just back off so the shoplifter can "unload" the item. If there is some certainty they have concealed an item, an employee might offer to hold it for them at the register until they are ready to check out. Most employees have little interest in acting in a security or loss arresting capacity. This attitude must be nurtured by managers.

Match a uniform officer with a plainclothes officer for every hour of loss arresting coverage. They supply two very safe bet functions. Our research indicates this is the best compound to deter theft. One without the other plainly lacks the uncut effectiveness they have working together. If the allocation allows only one officer, we advise a uniform officer who spends a great deal of their time concentrating on the former issues presented in this article.

Mount an safe bet camera, or dummy camera, in areas of generally stolen items. If using a camera encased in the fiberglass bubble, the bubble should be placed low adequate so the possible thief can see it.

Environmental organize is important. Passage to the shoplifter's target should be time consuming. Mirrors can be used to see nearby corners, or to make the possible shoplifter think they are being watched. Electronic tags are a possibility for the small, high-priced items that grocery shop sell like condition and attractiveness products and cigarettes. Sign and posters can be used to reinforce security messages. They should be placed where possible shoplifters will see them and nearby the store in varied locations, particularly nearby high-risk merchandise. It raises the perception that the store is serious about security. Direct customer traffic. Utilize less entrances and exits. sell out passageways, blind corners and incommunicable alcoves. sell out high displays that conceal shoppers. Arrange aisles that staff can honestly study from one end to the other. Remember, goods on the ground floor and near entrances are at greater risk of theft, because the shoplifter is in the store for less time and is thus at less risk of getting caught. Move hot products into higher security zones.

Post an officer or employee near the entrance just to check for a receipt. You may have noted at some of the Superstores like Costco and Sam's there is restricted customer entry and exit. Most have to enter and exit straight through one door. When exiting, there is an employee standing there to take the customer receipt and match it against their merchandise. This, we realize, may be unrealistic in a grocery setting, but just checking for a receipt, and not checking it against the merchandise may have an uncut effect.

Please think the study in which specific merchandise was prominently marked with large red stars as being often taken by shoplifters and shoplifting was virtually eliminated.

We like retention things uncomplicated and this one is a "no-brainer". Whether post store personnel close to the area most items are taken from or take those items and move them to an area where they are in direct eye-line sight of employees. Lacking these actions, we advise you put up a camera or dummy camera in the area and make the camera obvious, or post a uniformed security guard in that area.

I recently spoke to a retail employer at a major chain who indicated he has suggested, for several years, that the aisle containing often stolen items be moved to an area within employee view. The suggestion has fallen on deaf ears. Those who are in authority over him have decided aesthetics and consistency between shop takes precedence over these losses. In these incidences little can be done to forestall loss.

We encourage all the former techniques of loss prevention, but only if they are effective. We do believe that there needs to be a shift in the focus of loss arresting from protecting the merchandise to directly addressing the shoplifter responsible for most theft. Loss arresting and retail Operations needs to begin to describe more effectively, taking a fresh look at how they advent shoplifting.

The bottom Line

In summary, you have just read a requisite amount of facts which, if implemented, can have a profound impact on losses.
